A recently developed operational forecast system for the area of Galway Bay is presented. The wave dorecasting system takes advantage of modern numerical models, by nesting global ocean wave models to coastal and near-shore high resolution wave models. In this study, three numerical models are coupled: WRF, WAM and WAN.WRF atmospheric model is used to downscale GFS winds, to be used as forcing for the SWAN wave model, and the WAM wave model is used to model the swell generated in the North Atlantic ocean to create boundary conditions for the high-resolution wave model. The system provides a 3-day forecast and it has a 2-day warm-up. A validation study is performe dby comparing simulated wave parameters with corresponding in-situ wave rider buoy observations, deployed inside the bay, at the Galway Bay national Test Site.
