This study focuses on the formulation of collision risk detection facilities in ship navigation that can be integrated into an e-navigation environment of maritime transportation. Therefore, the present bridge technologies with respect to an e-navigation environment are discussed and the improvements to detect potential vessel collision situations ahead of time are presented in this study. A two vessel collision situation is considered in this study, where an extended Kalman filter is illustrated to estimate the relative bearing vector and the relative course-speed vector between vessels. The proposed collision detection process that consists of the cross and dot products among vessel velocity, bearing and heading vectors is also presented. Finally, the collision/near-collision situation is simulated and successful results on the detection of a potential collision situation ahead of time with respect to a two vessel situation are illustrated in this study.
