Zhou, X., Sutulo, S. and Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Simulation of hydrodynamic interaction forces acting on a ship sailing across a submerged bank or an approach channel”, Ocean Engineering, 2015, Vol. 103, pp. 103-113

Due to the difficulty in dealing with the complex bathymetry of water ways, the capability of real-time simulation systems of hydrodynamic interaction forces on a ship in restricted waters is typically limited to particular scenarios, such as the case of a ship on courses parallel to banks of constant profile. Based on the panelled moving patch method, a solution is proposed in this paper to handle complex water boundaries, in which the moving patch on the seabed is dynamically meshed by an optimized version of the paving algorithm and smoothed by a hybrid smoother. Through this approach, two typical hydrodynamic interaction scenarios of such case are studied, and numerical results are obtained for a variety of parameters of the ship’s course as well as the seabed’s characteristics in order to discover their effects.
