Merino da Silva, D. and Ventura, M. (2015) , “Design optimization of a bulk carrier for river/sea ore transport”, Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 119-128

This work presents a feasibility study of a river-sea bulk carrier for the transport of iron-ore from a new river terminal to a sea port in the Portuguese west coast. The objective of this study is to determine the optimum characteristics of the ship and service speeds. First the transport problem is described and the main design options are discussed. Next, the main components of the ship synthesis model, the voyage model and the optimization procedure are presented. Finally the results are discussed and some conclusions are drawn.
