Operation and maintenance (O&M) costs of offshore wind turbines represent a considerable share of the cost of the produced energy. The harsh environment poses different O&M challenges when compared with its onshore counterpart, namely, more limited access to turbines, higher logistic times and costs, longer repair/replacement times, higher degradation processes of the equipment, among others. Both offshore and onshore wind industries are quite recent not having yet reached the maturity of other industries such as the one of oil and gas production. Therefore, there has been a need to develop/adapt specific corrective (CM) and preventive maintenance (PM) models for optimization, even though such strategies are broadly used in many fields. In this paper a strategy is presented for combining CM replacements and age-based imperfect PM repairs. PM actions are performed considering the components’ age thresholds and an age reduction ratio, q. An offshore wind turbine consisting of several degraded components is considered. Failure models are based on onshore ones and derived through an empirical approach based on stress factors for mechanical systems. Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets with predicates and Monte Carlo simulation are used to model and simulate O&M activities considering logistic resources, times and costs, and weather constraints. A PM repair cost function dependent on q and on the age of the components is proposed and compared with aq-dependent cost function. in terms of their effect on the O&M costs and revenues.
