The aim of this article is to analyse the butt-weld induced distortions of steel welded panels employing the finite element method, real measurements and existing empirical equations for different welding sequences and weld toe geometry. A series of nonlinear, transient finite element analyses are performed. Different heating loads, defined as a moving heat source, simulate the welding process resulting from different welding sequences. The distortion after the welding is analysed to compare the estimated distortions employing the finite method, existing empirical equations and real measurements.
