Gaspar, J.F. and Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Modelling pump efficienty in a generic hydraulic Power Take-Off for wave energy point absorbers”, Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 1233-1242

This paper presents a generic PTO concept conceived for a platform to which several wave energy point absorbers are attached. However, this will be applicable also to other kinds of wave energy converters that operate on the basis of the relative motion between two bodies. Front end oil hydraulic technology is used in this concept such as hydraulic transformers connected to impressed pressure systems. The initial research carried out to analyze the proposed concept is also presented. More specifically, the paper deals with the modelling of pump efficiencies with an artificial neural network and its use to study relations between pump efficiency, displacement, rotation speed and pressure, and then to the definition of strategies for an efficient pump operation. According to the research results this modeling approach is accurate enough to be used in the development of the presented concept, as well in this field of research.
