The description of irregular sea states is given in terms of the superposition of various components of small amplitude linear waves. It is indicated that the time variation of the free surface elevation can be idealized as a stationary process that becomes fully described by a variance spectrum. Different spectra currently used to describe wave environments are discussed. The wave force generation mechanism is described. Short term and long term probabilistic models are considered.
