The exceedance distribution of maximum wave height is derived analytically for linear and third-order nonlinear models. The parameters of parent distributions are estimated from data records of Hurricane Camille, containing abnormal waves. The obtained results show that the third-order nonlinearities affect the tail of the probability distribution of wave heights. The third-order generalized Boccotti model, used as parent distribution, leads to higher probability of maximum wave height in comparison with other models.
