Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) searches for safe and optimized structural systems regarding variability of parameters related to material properties, loading or geometry. Robust design optimization (RDO) tries to find those systems that also have minimal variability of structural response. This paper presents a set of computer programs able to solve this two types of problems, composed of: (a) a structural analysis program capable of computing sensitivity information using the adjoint continuum method, (b) a reliability analysis program that uses the first order reliability method (FORM), (c) an optimization algorithm, sequential quadratic programming (SQP), implemented in the MATLAB Toolbox optimtool. The objective is to provide a basic platform to be used and further developed by structural engineering students and researchers to promote the application of these optimization techniques in current practice. The efficiency of the proposed framework is demonstrated by solving RBDO and RDO problems for a 31 bar truss structure.
