Yeter, B., Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2014), “Spectral fatigue assessment of an offshore wind turbine structure under wave and wind”, Developments in Maritime Transportation and Exploitation of Sea Resources, Guedes Soares, C. and López Peña F. (Eds.). Francis & Taylor Group, London, UK, pp. 425-434

The objective of this work is to perform a joint spectral fatigue damage assessment of an offshore wind turbine supporting structure, which comprises the integration of modern sea, wind, soil interaction, finite element and fatigue analyses in the frequency domain. A tripod structure at 40 m of depth designed to support the wind turbine of 5MW is analysed. The work carries out a joint spectral fatigue analysis under combined environmental loading of both wind and wave action simultaneously. Critical hotspot locations, which experience the most cumulative fatigue damage, are analysed based on FEM and the S-N fatigue damage approach. The long term stress ranges are defined by the Dirlik probability density functions and the S-N approach is then used to estimate the fatigue damage during the service life of 25 years.
