This work performs ultimate strength analysis of steel plates with a large opening subjected to axial compressive load. A series of nonlinear finite element analysis have been conducted. First, the ultimate strength of plates without an opening are numerically studied by varying the finite element size, boundary conditions, and thickness and is compared with existing empirical expressions. The effect of the opening ratio and orientation to the ultimate strength of plates with an opening is investigated and an expression is developed to estimate the ultimate strength of plates with an opening subjected to compressive loading as a function of the pate slenderness and residual plate-breadth ratio. The failure modes are discussed and the change of the failure mode at a certain residual breadth ratio is also investigated.
