This study presents a climatology of the wind sea and swell waves in the Northeast Atlantic, covering the Norwegian, North and Barents Seas, comparing it to the global ocean features. The study is based on the NORA10 high resolution regional reanalysis. The NORA 10 (Norwegian Reanalysis at 10 km) is a dynamical downscale of the 45-yr European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis ERA-40 reanalysis, and has atmospheric and wave parameters. The spatial pattern of the seasonal wind sea and swell significant wave heights (SWH), how they combine in the total mean and extreme SWH, and how they are balanced in terms of energy at the ocean surface are shown. The swell dominance of the ocean surface, based on the wave age parameter, is also shown.
