This paper proposes a methodology to overcome inference failures on a fuzzy logic based decision making process applied to collision avoidance in ocean navigation. The fuzzy inference failures are observed in three distinct situations: intersected contradictory decision boundaries; improper transition region between the inference boundaries of non-intersected contradictory decisions; contradictory decision accumulation under multiple obstacle scenarios. The solutions to overcome the above fuzzy inference failures and their limitations are discussed in this study. The proposed solutions consist of: insertion of fuzzy smooth transition regions; determination of the proper size of the fuzzy smooth transition regions; using multi-level decision/action formulations. Even though this study is formulated for an ocean navigation collision avoidance system, any similar Mamdani type fuzzy logic based navigation systems can suffer similar failures in specific situations. Therefore, the proposed methodology can be implemented to overcome fuzzy inference failures in the decision making process of navigation systems. Furthermore, this study analyzes an ocean navigation decision making process, derives input and output fuzzy membership functions, formulates a If-Then rule based fuzzy inference system, and presents simulation results that support recovery from rule inference failures in several contradictory decision boundary conditions. Finally, the overall system performance is demonstrated on a multi-vessel collision situation.
