Rusu, L. and Guedes Soares, C. (2014), “Forecasting fishing vessel responses in coastal areas”, Journal of Marine Science and Technology, Vol. 19, pp. 215-227

The study proposed in the present work has as objective the increase of the safety navigation for the fishing vessels operating in the Iberian nearshore. The methodology assumed is based on the results of a wave forecasting system implemented for the entire west Iberian coastal environment that allows a better assessing of the vessels’ seakeeping performances under different operational conditions. The proposed procedure requires the knowledge of the transfer functions for different speeds and headings. The computations are made for two different types of fishing vessels that currently operate in the Portuguese coastal environment and they are based on the use of the strip theory method. Ship motions and derived responses are evaluated against the prescribed values of the most important seakeeping criteria, to determine the limit sea state that still allows for standard operational conditions. Based on the relationship that exists between the predicted significant wave height in a grid point of the wave prediction area and the maximum allowed significant wave height that corresponds to the mean period simulated in that point for a specific criterion, risk indexes are computed. The results are presented as risk maps for various areas from the Portuguese coastal environment and they would lead to the safety increasing of the fishing activities in the Iberian coastal environment.
