The objective of this work is to analyse the fatigue damage of an optimized deck structure composed of butt weld joints of different thicknesses. The analysis adopts the hot spot stress approach based on three dimensional finite element models. The stress concentration factor is estimated using a linearization of the calculated principal stresses around the hot spot. Fatigue damage is calculated based on the Palmgren-Miner approach accounting for the long-term distribution of the stress ranges resulting from the wave-induced vertical bending moments applied to a container ship hull. The importance of the plate thickness change of a butt-welded plate joint and the midship section modulus of an optimized container ship hull has been also analysed.
