Fonseca, N., Ralchev, H. and Guedes Soares, C. (2001), ”Seakeeping Assessment of a Monohull Operating in the Portuguese Waters”, Proceedings of the III International Conference on Marine Industry (MARIND’01), 4-8 June, Varna, Bulgaria, Vol. III, Section 3, pp. 63-74

The paper presents a methodology to calculate the seakeeping performance of ships. The results depend on the geometric and inertial characteristics of the ship, the ocean area of operation and some defined seakeeping criteria. An application example to a monohull is presented. The procedure follows several steps, starting with the calculation of the ship motions transfer functions and some related variables. Next, the ship responses to irregular seas are calculated using the spectral analysis. The maximum allowable significant wave heights are obtained by comparing the ship responses in irregular seas with seakeeping criteria. Finally an operability index is defined for a specific ocean area as the percentage of time that the ship can operate with good seakeeping
