Chen, N.-Z. and Guedes Soares, C. (2011), “Ultimate Strength and Reliability of Composite Material Structures”, Maritime Engineering and Technology, Guedes Soares et al. (Eds),Taylor & Francis Group, London, pp. 817-840

Composite material structures have found extensive applications as primary structures in industries, and for safety reasons, they require high reliability. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of ultimate strength prediction and reliability analysis, for composite material structures with emphasis on laminated composite structures. Progressive Failure Analysis (PFA), theories of laminated composite plates, failure criteria, property degradation models, reliability analysis, and stochastic finite element analysis for composite structures are discussed. Technical challenges and potential problems are addressed and future directions are suggested.
