The paper presents a review of the work carried out by the authors on the motions and global structural loads induced by abnormal waves and extreme seas on a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Platform. The calculation method is based on a nonlinear time domain strip theory where the radiation forces are represented by convolution integrals of impulse response functions, together with infinite frequency added masses and radiation restoring coefficients. The radiation and diffraction forces are assumed linear, while the Froude-Krylov and hydrostatic forces are computed exactly on the instantaneous hull wetted surface. The time domain code is applied to calculate the responses to deterministic wave traces that include abnormal waves. These wave traces were measured in the ocean and they include abnormal wave events. Several conclusions were obtained regarding: the dynamics of the FPSO encountering abnormal waves, the relations between the ship responses and the characteristics of these waves, the effect of ship length and the severity of the global ship responses. Time domain simulations with long duration are also carried out for random design seastates and the expected maximum results compared with the former. The investigation includes also experimental work with scaled models in wave basins. The predicted maximum structural loads are compared with the Classification Society minimum requirements.
