In this paper a numerical model, able to describe the transient operation of the main components of a marine propulsion plant and of the whole system is presented. The system comprises different elements such as shaftlines, clutches, gears, bearings and elastic couplings, according to the operational requirements of the ship. Different transient operational conditions are considered such as: starting or stopping the engines, clutching or declutching, emergency manoeuvres such as crash stop, slam start and heavy sea operation. The model is able to predict the magnitude of the dynamic parameters such as stresses, velocities and accelerations induced by these transient operations.
