A technique is presented for estimating time-domain wave-induced ship hull bending moments and shear forces from ship motion measurements based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN’s). The objective of the use of this methodology is to obtain an expedite hull monitoring tool to be used on board the ships. The ANNs are used to model the time-domain relationship between the ship motions and the wave-induced vertical bending moments and shear forces.A mathematical model based on a strip theory formulation provides the ship motions data in the time domain allowing the validation of the method through numerical simulations.
