The main objective of this article is to outline a simple method to identify whether a ship is susceptible to extreme rolling, in order to avoid or to reduce the effects of that phenomenon. A short review of the current classifi cation societies’ recommendations is given, as well as a brief description of the physical phenomenon of parametric roll resonance. Analysis criteria to determine the vulnerability of a particular vessel to parametric roll (susceptibility criteria) are applied following the American Bureau of Shipping operational guidelines for the assessment of parametric roll resonance in the estimation of container carriers attainable ship speed and heading. The calculations and checks for particular vessels are done for the design wave and forward speed which will most likely lead to the development of parametric roll. Using a time-domain, non-linear numerical model of ship’s motions in 6 degrees-of-freedom analysis for regular head waves is conducted for a C11 class containership (severity criteria).
