Shipping is probably one of the biggest economic activities in the world. The very low prices in the maritime transport and the world’s dependency of oil trade, which has faced a large increase in the last decades, are seen as a strong sight of the nonstop trend in this context. On the other hand, among other environmental threats to the marine environment, major discharges of hazardous sub¬stances, including oil spills, are those that can produce bigger impact on public and cause the greatest concerns to the coastal states’ authorities. Some of the world’s most important oil trade routes cross Por¬tuguese jurisdictional waters. It is now possible to count some hundreds of vessels—sometimes around one thousand—sailing off Portuguese coast every moment. This paper aims to present the Portuguese experience in terms of incidents involving oil spills through the statistical analysis of available data that have been collected by the Maritime Authority for almost four decades.
