In this paper the work on the roll damping prediction of ships, leading to parametric rolling is reviewed. The method adopted in the study is an Ikeda component-based one, and each component is predicted theoretically if possible, otherwise by empirical ways. The method has been modified to improve its accuracy and to extend its applicability to other kinds of ships. To investigate the influence of the roll damping estimation method on parametric rolling prediction, extensive roll decrement tests were conducted. For larger roll angles nonlinearities become even more significant. A time-domain 6 DOF numerical simulation method is applied for the investigation of parametric roll resonance in regular head waves. The obtained numerical results were compared with the corresponding available experimental measurements and commented. The experimental validation clearly demonstrated that the implementation of nonlinear treatment of roll damping component improves the accuracy of numerical model results.
