In this paper, the identification of a wave-induced parametric resonance condition in head seas is carried out with the use of a time-domain, non-linear numerical model of vessel's motions in 3 degrees-of-freedom (heave, roll and pitch). A quasi-static approach is adopted for the roll motion in waves, in which calculations of significant variations on transverse stability are made using a pressure integration technique over the submerged hull. Longitudinal plane motions include dynamic and hydrodynamic effects in waves for a given encounter frequency. The results provide new insights into the existing linearised theory of stability of vessels in a longitudinal seaway and demonstrate the usefulness of the technique proposed.
