Kolev, P., Tsenkov, M., Georgiev, P. and Guedes Soares, C. (2005), “Upgrade of Existing Bulk Carriers to Meet the New Requirements”, Proceedings of the International Conference "Design and Operation of Bulk Carriers" (RINA), 18 - 19 October, London – UK, pp. 87-93

Bulk carriers have become notorious among the public due to high level of accidents causing losses of lives. In the last decade the attention of IMO and IACS has been focused on various kind of legislation leading to improvement of safety of this type of ships, leading to the development of the Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers. The paper presents the results from studies aiming to upgrade two existing ship designs so as to make them satisfy the new requirements. It was found that for the considered Handysize bulk carriers the new regulations do not lead to significant increase of the steel weight and to reducing of cargo capacity. The deadweight reduction could be limited by choosing an appropriate topology, stiffening and proper use of high strength steel for the hull and hatch covers.
