Liu, ZH., Zhou, D., Zheng, ZG., Wu, Z.L. and Guedes Soares, C. (2025), A multi-dimensional formulation for assessing regional collision risk based on AIS data, Applied Ocean Research, Vol. 161, 104612.
This paper proposes a multi-dimensional formulation for identifying regional collision risk based on AIS data to assess the collision risk under increasingly complex traffic conditions accurately. The proposed framework incorporates the influence of collision avoidance, multi-ship encounters and the development of collision risk by generating three different risk distances. The three risk distances are integrated into a three-dimensional collision risk space to identify the regional a three-dimensional collision risk space to identify the regional collision risk through radial distribution functions. The actual AIS data of Bohai Strait is used to carry out experimental case studies to validate the proposed framework. The results show that the proposed formulation can identify the risk of collision in the sea area and has the advantage of considering the influence of complicated ship traffic. The proposed formulation can aid maritime surveillance operators in monitoring the collision risk regionally, especially in complicated traffic situations, to contribute to the safety of navigation.
