Santos, T.A. and Batista Santos, P.M. (2024), Analysis of the Evolution of Cargo Handling in Portuguese Ports over the last 25 years (in Portuguese), Ingenium, Vol. 185, pp. 92-97
Port infrastructures are of great importance for the economic development of any nation, especially for those that are located in coastal areas, define themselves as maritime nations and have economies that are very open to the outside world: the typical case of Portugal. Additionally, economic and port development is logically of interest across several engineering specialties, with natural emphasis on naval and civil engineering, so it is important to analyse the topic in detail.
Portuguese ports have experienced a large development, particularly since Portugal’s accession to the European Union in 1986. However, particularly since 2010, they have faced important challenges in the face of successive economic crises, pandemics and the energy transition. This communication presents an overview of the last 25 years of cargo movement in the most relevant Portuguese ports, based on its own database, built by crossing information from various official sources.
The situation is analysed for the main types of cargo (bulk, general cargo, containerized, roll-on/roll-off) and also for the
cruise ship passenger segment. Statistical data is shown for certain types of cargo and ports, selected because they show
drastic changes in cargo movement patterns. It is shown in a qualitative and, occasionally, quantitative way, how the fac-
tors mentioned above, as well as changes in the local economic fabric, cause these changes. Finally, it is analysed how
far we are from the mythical number of 100 million tons of cargo handled.
