Mendes, J.P., Marques, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2024), Risk avoidance in strategic technology adoption, Journal of Modelling in Management, pp. 1485-1509

Because of their different roles and attributes, it is useful to distinguish between commodity and strategic technologies in technology management studies. The definition of technology is generalized to include management procedures. In the particular case of strategic technology adoption, three major sources of risk are frequently overlooked during strategy making. These are the risk of mismatched requirements, the risk of supplier dependence, and the risk of unmanaged life cycles. They are introduced here using a progressively built causal loop diagram, which highlights their systemic nature. The example of adopting Enterprise Resource Planning systems in maritime container terminals illustrates these risks.
