Ramos, S., Silva, D. and Guedes Soares, C. (2023), Optimal configuration of the hybrid electric system in Porto Santo Island, Trends in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. (Ed.), Taylor and Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 777-786
An approach is proposed to evaluate various micro-grid hybrid electric system configuration possibilities, in terms of installed capacity of different conversion technologies. A multi-objective optimization algorithm has been applied (hybrid Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm) to determine the Pareto front of optimal trade-off solutions, which compete between a low environmental impact and a cost-effective system. As a case study, the method has been applied to the electric market of Porto Santo Island, where currently existing conventional and renewable electricity generation forms (thermoelectric, onshore wind and solar PV) have been evaluated together with new forms of marine energy (waves and offshore wind). The optimization problem is subjected to linear and non-linear constrains related with the minimum supply of the islands’ electric demand, a minimum renewable energy factor, and an established limit of CO2 emissions.
