Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2001), “Fatigue Reliability Analysis of a Corner of the Hatchway of a Bulk Carrier”, Proceedings of the III Meeting of Metal and Mixed Structures, 6-7 December, Aveiro, Portugal, pp. 553-562
The work presented here analyses the reliability of a welded structural joint of a bulk carrier with
respect to fatigue crack growth. The crack is assumed to appear after a random period of time at the corner of the
hatchway. The model applied describes the crack growth as a time dependent function using linear fracture
mechanics. Long-term stress range response of the welded joint is calculated based on the combination of the
global and the local loading. Fatigue reliability is predicted based on a time variant formulation and the effect of repair and maintenance is also quantified.
