This paper describes the competition dynamics of ports in the Portuguese Range, a multi-port gateway region facing the Atlantic in the westernmost coast of Europe. An account of the evolution of the main Portuguese ports is made, namely by describing the evolution of these ports in terms of infrastructure, hinterland connections and supporting logistic infrastructures. Port throughput is also analyzed, aiming at identifying which of the ports in this multi-port gateway region have seen its throughput grow in the last decade and which have witnessed a stagnation process. The competitive positioning of each one is analyzed using different techniques: concentration index, shift-share analysis, competitive positioning matrix. A System Dynamics model, making use of the Lotka-Volterra competition equations, is proposed for describing the competition between ports in a quantitative manner. The results from such model are linked to the qualitative analysis of hinterland extension and overlapping. Such model allows the quantification of the intensity of competition between ports and shows an intense competition between the ports in the southern part of the Portuguese range.
