Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2007), “Structural Reliability of Ship Hull Subjected to Non-linear Time Dependent Deterioration, Inspection and Repair”, Proceedings of the 10th International Symposium on Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures (PRADS´07), Houston, Texas, USA

The work presents a reliability assessment of a bulk carrier hull subjected to the degrading effect of corrosion. A non-linear corrosion model representing realistic situations in evaluation of corrosion deterioration for ship structures is applied and comparisons for the time variant reliability of ship structures are shown. The effect of corrosion on the section modulus is accounted for various average value of the 1/n th highest corrosion thickness and it is used as the reference variable to measure the reliability of the ship hull against collapse. The effect of maintenance actions is modeled as a stochastic process and different repair policies including the one adapted by the new IACS common structural rules are discussed.
