The present research studies the effect of a local initial defect on the ultimate buckling strength of a sandwich pipe under external hydrostatic pressure. The ultimate carrying capacity of sandwich pipes is determined by numerical simulations. The validation is performed by comparing the results of numerical calculations with those of a laboratory experiment. Then, the initial defect features and the ovality effect on the ultimate buckling strength are considered. Finally, several meaningful guidelines are concluded to describe the impact of local initial defects.
