Elsaka, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2024), Ultimate strength of corrugated-core sandwich plates under in-plane compression, Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 393-399.

To achieve a lightweight hull design, the conventional stiffened plate structure is replaced with a metal sandwich structure, reducing the weight of the hull while maintaining the original structure's load-bearing capabilities. The study aims to evaluate the load-bearing capabilities of I-type, V-type and U-type metal corrugated sandwich panels when subjected to uniaxial compression. This evaluation involves the implementation of buckling analysis and nonlinear finite element analysis using ANSYS software. The assessed the load-bearing capabilities of both conventional and corrugated-core sandwich panels under identical weights are compared. A significant increase in the hull bearing capacity based on corrugated-core sandwich panel is observed. The discernible differences in lightweight design and weight reduction effectiveness among various structural types are apparent. A comprehensive analysis of the fundamental principles governing lightweight characteristics in metal sandwich panels can serve as an informative guide for their incorporation into the design of hull structures.
