In this study, lightning strike damage of woven Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (W-CFRP) laminates and woven composite honeycomb sandwich panels (W-CHSPs) are simulated using the proposed coupled thermal-electrical-mechanical coupling finite element (FE) model incorporating dielectric breakdown of materials. Surface current, and shockwave overpressure were applied on the composite surface. The failure behaviours of intralaminar damage and interlaminar delamination of the W-CFRPs and W-CHSPs were considered in the FE model by using LaRC05 criterion. The corresponding lightning strike tests are conducted, and the damage characteristics characterized by using visual inspection, image processing, ultrasonic scanning and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) compare well with the FE-predicted results. Then, the lightning damage mechanism of CHSPs was proposed. It can be concluded that the newly proposed thermal-electrical-mechanical coupling model demonstrates enhanced predictive accuracy.
