Saad-Eldeen, S., Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Strength assessment of wash plates subjected to combined lateral and axial loading”, Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 553-564

This work presents a strength assessment of wash plates that are used to minimise the effect of sloshing or impact pressure. The wash plates are subjected to combined loading resulting from axial compressive and lateral pressure. A series of nonlinear finite element analyses are conducted and the ultimate strength of plates with and without openings is studied. The effect of the degree of opening intensity on the ultimate strength of wash plates is investigated for different thicknesses as well as quantity of openings. Also, the influence of the lateral pressure variation in the wash plate’s ultimate strength is assessed. The effect of openings and their location with respect to the middle of the plate is explored and failure modes are discussed. Also recommendations for the wash plate design are highlighted.
