This paper deals with codes for the design of fishing vessels in composite materials, in particular in glass fibre reinforced plastics. A comparison is provided of the methods adopted in the rules of different classification societies for the design of ships in composite materials. Three ships of different sizes are designed with the different rules and the resulting designs are compared so as to determinate the influence of choosing different stiffening systems and different rules. It was found that the differences in the total hull weight that result from applying different rules vary by more than 100%.
