Calvário, M., Wang, S. and Guedes Soares, C. (2025), Effect of lay-up sequence on the hydroelastic response of three-dimensional axisymmetric buoys under slamming loads, Innovations in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. & Wang S. (Ed.), Taylor and Francis Group, London, UK, 971-978.
This paper assesses the lay-up role of composite materials on the water impact response of hemispherical and conical buoys made under constant velocity water entry. The analysis is undertaken considering glass-fibre, and carbon fibre reinforced polymers and a comparison is made with traditional steel and aluminium metals. The fluid-structure interaction is determined with an explicit finite element approach. The comparison between materials and lay-ups takes into consideration the slamming force, hydrodynamic pressure and strain at sensors. According to the results, significant differences in the deformations are found for the different lay-ups and in general lower deformations are obtained with the conical buoy.
