Gaspar, J.F., Hallak, T.S., Guedes Soares, C., Costa, M. M.G. and Nepomuceno, E. (2025), Review of wave energy converter design for offshore hybrid platforms, Innovations in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. & Wang S. (Ed.), Taylor and Francis Group, London, UK, 795-805.

This paper presents a review study of different wave energy converter designs used in offshore hybrid floating platforms. It also attempts to present the generic architecture of these hybrids by analyzing their variants and relations with wind turbine structural requirements, in contrast with the state-of-the-art reviews dedicated to categorizing and classifying platforms regarding technologies. The main objective of this study is to obtain a general understanding of the field, issues, challenges and paths for research and innovation. Its organized regarding the wave energy converter design process, from wind turbine design requirements to wave energy converter design specifications by the application of conversion methodologies. These methodologies are applied to hybrid architecture variants, about 77 in total, and are presented in this paper after performing a morphological analysis of the concepts. Furthermore, the evolutionary path of these methodologies is analyzed and presented, to highlight the modelling and simulation complexities related to the need to combine different, wave and wind, technologies.
