Rodrigues, M.I.P., Wang, S. and Guedes Soares, C. (2025), Analysis of forward speed influence on vertical bending moment uncertainty in S175 containerships, Innovations in the Analysis and Design of Marine Structures, Garbatov, Y. & Guedes Soares C. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis, London, UK, 29-37.
This study explores the impact of forward speed on the uncertainties in predicting amidship vertical bending moments on an S175 containership. The assessment is conducted at two Froude numbers, representing different forward speeds, using seakeeping codes based on potential flow theory. Transfer functions derived from these codes and other numerical studies, including strip theory, computational fluid dynamics, and fluid-structure interaction simulations, are validated against experimental benchmark data. Prediction uncertainties are then quantified using commonly applied short-term uncertainty measures, such as Frequency Independent Model Error, Coefficient of Determination, and Modified Total Difference. These measures facilitate systematically comparing the different forward speed outcomes and numerical approaches. The study concludes with a comprehensive assessment of the precision and accuracy of the numerical solutions, confirming that forward speed significantly affects the accuracy of vertical load predictions, amplifying uncertainties.
