This paper investigates the vertical bending, horizontal bending, and torsion loads on an ultra- large container ship in high sea states and different Froude numbers using a strip theory-based 2D time domain code. The numerical solver is based on a potential flow theory and a body nonlinear approach. The hydrodynamic coefficients are estimated using the 2-D panel method. The numerical simulations are carried out in two regular oblique waves and an irregular head wave of high steepness. Vertical, horizontal and torsional rigid body loads in high and moderate oblique waves at different vessel speeds are predicted reasonably well. Even though loads are slightly overestimated by the numerical method in the moderate wave and high Froude number case, numerical results show a better comparison with experimental results at a high wave and moderate vessel speed. The statistical evaluation and comparison of numerical values with experimental results for an irregular head sea case are also presented.
