Hassan, M.A.A.A. and Guedes Soares, C. (2023), Dynamic analysis of a novel installation method of floating spar wind turbines, Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, Vol. 11, 1373

This paper presents the performance of a new floating ship-shape wind turbine installation vessel (Nordic Wind) in the installation process. The vessel can transport pre-assembled wind turbines from the marshalling port to the offshore installation site. Each assembled turbine will be positioned over pre-installed floating spar structure. The main challenge is to analyse the responses of the multibody system under simultaneous wind, current and wave loads. Time-domain simulations are implemented for the coupled system with mechanical coupling, mooring system for the spar, and for the installation vessel. The main aim on the monitoring and connection stages prior to the mating operations between the turbine and the floating spar, and discuss the effects of wind, current and wave conditions on motion responses of the installation vessel and the spar, relative motions at the mating point, gripper forces and mooring forces. The relative motion at the mating point is less sensitive to the turbine blade orientations but influenced by the wave conditions. Under the investigated environmental conditions, the presented installation concept shows sufficiently good performance.
