A comparative study has been conducted in which different organisations performed calculations of long-term wave-induced load effects in a containership and a tanker using the same input data of transfer functions and wave scatter diagram. The results of the study allowed some estimates to be made of the model uncertainty involved in these calculations. These results were compared with the uncertainty derived from other sources. Furthermore, a discussion is provided on the limitations of these calculations, in particular, of the choice of wave scatter diagram and of not accounting for the non-linearity of response.
