Gonçalves, M., Bernardo, C., Bernardino, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2023), Climate change impacts on the wave energy in the Azores Islands , Trends in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. (Ed.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 343-352
Spectral boundary conditions from the North Atlantic basin WAVEWATCH III wave model run are used to force a second level nested grid to produce the wave information at the Azores Islands. The simulations are performed for a 25-year period between 1990-2014, using winds and ice-cover data from an RCP8.5 EC-Earth system integration and downscaled with the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). The annual and seasonal mean wave power is evaluated. To estimate the EC-Earth/WW3 simulations, a comparison between the 1990-2014 simulations and the same 25-year period from ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) is performed. Finally, to study the variability of wave energy in a specific location, 6 points are selected along the Azores coast. The wave power is assessed for each point, the monthly variability shows the high values within the winter months.
