In the present study the mean as well as extreme values of average wave stepness are evaluated for different locations using wave buoy, satellite, hindcast as well as visual wave data. Uncertainties related to the wave steepness estimates are discussed. The obtained values are compared with the values specified in design guidelines. Finally, recommendations concerning the estimates of extreme mean wave steepness are provided.
