Guedes Soares, C and Ferreira, J.A. (1995), “Modelling Long-term Distributions of Significant Wave Height”, Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE’95), Guedes Soares, C. (Ed.), ASME, New York, pp. 51-61
The problems involved with the use of parametric models describe the long-term behaviour of the significant wave height are discussed. In particular, it is shown that the usual understanding of "good fit" does not ensure a good representation of the tails. The problem of defining a population and of choosing one sample for infering the parameters of the distribution is discussed. In particular, the time-varying character of the data is illustrated. A new model of long-term distribution is proposed which accounts for this variability.
