Sancho, M., Bernardino, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2024), A high-resolution wave energy assessment for the Sines region, Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.) Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 681-689.
Global warming is a present concern, and ambitious global targets for low-carbon energy sources have been set. Therefore, it is important to investigate other renewable sources like wave energy and Portugal stands as a prime location for wave energy extraction. High-resolution simulations in the vicinity of the port of Sines covered a 22-year period (1989-2010) forced with boundary conditions from the CLIMENA project and winds from the ERA-INTERIM database. To further enhance coastal resolution, a nested domain within the Iberian Peninsula area was performed. Calibration was carried out using in-situ data from an oceanographic buoy near the port of Sines. Different interest points were chosen to test seven different WECs for average electric power production. The coastal area south of Sines seems to give interesting results regrading power production and a location in this area is studied in further detail. From the different WEC’s tested, the Wave Dragon is the one producing the best results in this evaluation, although with some depth limitations.
