Bernardino, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2024), Assessing wind and wave climate in the North Atlantic using ERA20 reanalysis data, Advances in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A. (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 599-607.

The present work aims to evaluate changes in marine climate in the North Atlantic using the ERA20C reanalysis data set available from the ECMWF, that extends from the beginning of the 20th century until the first decade of the 21st century. To assess the adequality of this data set, sea state variables as significant wave heigh of total sea, significant wave height of the swell component and mean wave period and also 10 meters wind magnitude (W10) are extracted for 4 locations in the North Atlantic and compared with ERA-Interim data for the overlapping period. Long-term statistical characteristics of the marine conditions, for the 110 years of ERA20 data are analysed as well as interannual variability and changes in the seasonal cycle. The relation between winter marine climate and the North Atlantic Oscillation is evaluated and a positive correlation with a correlation coefficient above 0.5, in the area to the north-east of the domain and a significant negative correlation area centred around 30° N is found.
