Guedes Soares, C., Sebastião, P. and Silva, F. (2000), “System for Oil Spill Prediction”, Hydraulic Engineering Software VIII (Hydrosoft 2000), Southampton, WITPress, pp. 217-226

A system is described to simulate and visualise the trajectory and fate of oil spills. The system uses a GIS to store the geo-referenced information, such as bathimetry and mean conditions of wind, currents and waves. It includes also the physico-chemical properties of the most common crude oils. The computation of the weathering of the spill and its trajectory is performed by different modules that can be used operationally with forecasted met-ocean conditions. However it can also be used with the mean conditions resident in the system while forecast data is not available.
